In case you have some questions or concerns on the registration process and/or accessing Johnny's Web (J-Web) and its content, this is the place to go! Some of the content here are translated from the Support section of J-Web (specifically the よくある問い合わせ part), while others are taken from my own experience as well as those of other users of the service.
If you have other questions that are not yet addressed here, or any corrections/modifications you want to share based on your experience in registering for the service, please leave a comment!
DEVICE REQUIREMENTS
1. What devices can be used to access J-Web?
Most smartphones and Japanese feature phones should have the capability to access J-Web. According to the site's Support section, however, Android tablets and iPads are not supported.
In theory, you cannot view the site using a PC. It may be possible with the use of plug-ins for browsers but this is something I personally don't do. I wouldn't recommend it, either.
2. Is there a specific operating system requirement?
As of this writing, the site mentions that J-Web can be viewed from devices with Android 4 and up, as well as iOS 7 and up. It also specifies that only the default browsers installed with the device are capable of accessing J-Web. However, I've tried viewing it with Firefox (which is not installed by default in my Android device) and it works fine, so that's also one thing to consider.
PRE-REGISTRATION AND REGISTRATION
1. Does J-Web accept free email services (e.g. Gmail, Yahoo!) for registration?
Yes, they do! I used my Gmail address to register and everything worked as expected. Just make sure to allow your email client to accept mail from johnnys-web.com so that they don't go into your Spam or get rejected altogether.
2. Is a Japanese phone number required to register for J-Web?
No, it is not required. Unlike Johnny's Family Club (JFC) which requires a Japanese phone number to complete registration (at least from my experience), only a valid email address and credit card for payment is required.
3. Do I have to be a JFC member to gain access to J-Web?
JFC membership is not a pre-requisite to register for J-Web. However, certain content in J-Web are available exclusively to JFC members. Questions on this topic are in the next section.
3. I completed all the pre-registration steps but have not yet received an email with the registration link. What's up with that?
Make sure that the email you entered during pre-registration is correct and that your email client is able to receive mail from johnnys-web.com. It may take a while for the email with the link to arrive, but patience is the key. It shouldn't take more than an hour, but if it takes way too long you can repeat the pre-registration steps at another time using the same email address.
4. I got the email with the registration link, but when I click it the browser does not go to the registration page.
It's likely that the link has expired. If this happens, you have to repeat the pre-registration process again.
5. What types of cards are accepted for the credit card payment option?
J-Web Support lists down JCB, VISA, MasterCard, AMEX, and Diners Club as acceptable cards. I used a MasterCard credit card issued outside Japan and it worked perfectly, and others have shared that debit cards also seem to work as long as they are issued by the above-mentioned providers.
6. How much does the subscription to J-Web cost? How often will I be billed?
As of this writing, the monthly subscription costs 324 JPY with tax. Billing will be once a month, and should appear in your credit card payable list every first of the month.
7. If I subscribe to J-Web in the middle or end of the month, will I still be billed for the entire month?
Yes. They don't divide the cost on a daily basis, so if you end up subscribing on the last day of a particular month (e.g. January 31st, April 30th, etc.), you will still be billed the entire fee for that month. [This happened to me, so be wise in scheduling the start of your subscription.]
8. Can I cancel my subscription to J-Web?
Yes, you can. The tutorial to that will follow on a later date.
ACCESSING CONTENT EXCLUSIVE TO JOHNNY'S FAMILY CLUB MEMBERS
1. Do I really, really have to be a fan club member to access pictures of my favorite idol's face?
Legally, yes. It's the company's current business model so ideally we have to follow it. ^^;; Blogs of some idols like Kokubun Taichi's (of TOKIO) give access to pictures with TOKIO's faces for all J-Web subscribers. Otherwise, however, fan club membership is required to access those content.
2. Does membership to the fan club of one group/solo talent give you access to exclusive content of another group/solo talent?
Except for rare cases like those mentioned in the previous question, the answer is no. Membership to the Arashi fan club is needed to view JFC-exclusive content in Arashi members' blogs. Membership to Sexy Zone's fan club is needed to view JFC-exclusive content in the blogs of Sexy Zone members. And so on, and so forth.
3. I have membership to various groups/solo talents. Does J-Web allow setting up access of exclusive content for multiple groups/solo talents at the same time? Is there a limit to the number of groups/solo talents that can be set up?
Yes, you can view JFC-exclusive content of multiple groups/solo talents at the same time as long as you have the membership for each one. However, the process of setting up has to be done individually. As for the maximum number of groups that can be set up, I know of people who have 2 groups set up. If you or someone you know has more than 2 groups set up for the viewing of exclusive content, please mention it in the comments so that the information can be added here.
